After stopping off at Starbase Yorktown, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by an unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves fighting against a ruthless enemy with a well-earned hatred of the Federation and everything it stands for. Only a rebellious alien warrior can help them reunite and leave the planet to stop this deadly menace from beginning a possible galactic war. Whether you like the newest Star Trek movie will really depend a lot on what you like in a movie. If you love near-constant action, tons of amazing special effects and explosions, then there is more than enough to delight you. On the other hand, if you want a film that is more plot-driven and a multidimensional villain whose actions make any sense, then you are also in for a big letdown.

The plot is very, very simple. Enterprise is sent on a rescue mission that turns out to be a trap. A baddie and his minions attack and blow up a lot of stuff. Most of the crew is taken prisoner or killed and it's up to the rest of the crew to figure out a way to rescue them and save the quadrant. There really isn't much more to it than this.

Apart from the breathtaking special effects, the film is nice because like all the newer Trek films, it doesn't all rest on the big three–Kirk, Spock and McCoy. There is a nice ensemble feel to it and everyone contributes about equally. Additionally, the crew's new friend, Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), is an excellent character– strikingly beautiful and amazingly toughwelllikable. I anticipate you'll be seeing more of her in upcoming installments of the franchise.

As farthe bad about the film goes, the baddie is played by the excellent actor, Idris Elba. However, he's hidden under such thick prosthetics through most of the film that he seem wasted at times. Additionally, his actions and motivations just seemed confusing and muddled. Also confusing was the big confrontation scene at the end where he and Kirk square off. Now considering if Elba's character wins, he might be able to kill millions…or more. So what does Kirk do? Instead of instantly killing the guy once he's gotten the upper hand, they stop and chat a bit! What?! Kirk's spent the entire film trying to defeat the guy and the villain is nearly invincible and hell-bent on genocide…you talk and give him a chance to escape?! It just came offanticlimactic and a bit silly. I dedicated my summary line to this "station" created in space because it is without equals the most exquisite set piece in space Sci-fi movies to-date. To those of us who had their initiation to space sci-fi in "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), it was quite a thrilling experience to see an environment where gravity is created, where "up" is simply the opposite direction of what your feet are standing on. Four and a half decades later, while fundamentals remain the same, we marvel at "Elysium" (2013). While gravity is still generated by a revolving wheelin the spaceship of "2001", the "wheel" is now an entire city complete with lakes and forests in addition to exquisitely landscaped dwellingswellbusiness high-rises. But then, York Town completely dwarfs Elysium. The complex structure is nothing less than mind-boggling. You have to see it to appreciate it.

All this is in no way intended to undermine the crew that, after two instalments of the Star Trek reboot, needs no introduction. No apologies therefore for completely omitting the names of this excellent second generation cast at this point. I shall mention here two newcomers. The villain, who invariably gets vanquished at the end and therefore appears in only one instalment, is played by Idris Elba, known for his top-notch portrayal of Nelson Mandela. He is however probably better knownthe guardian of the portal that joins the nine worlds. Possibly to stay is a friendly alien who ends up being invited to join the Enterprise crew, Jaylah (sounds a bit funny, like "jailor", when spoken), played by Sofia Boutella, lovely 34-year old Algerian-born actress Sofia Boutella. In colour-skin-neutral makeup, she can be mistaken for Hilary Swank. "Possibly" I said because Alice Eve who looked promising in the last instalment isn't around this time.

The plot line,in trillions of action movies of all genre, involves a coveted object. Referred to"the artifact" in this movie, this is a disc-shaped devise that can kill en masse. That is all we need to know. In order to get it, Krall the villain kidnaps shiploads of crews from various space vehicles.

With Star Trek movies, I find that the journey is often more enjoyable than the final destination. While there are mandatory plot twists and "revelations", the plot line here is sweetly simple, linear, for one things. Thirty minutes into the movie, we see Enterprise crashing, completely demolished. The cast is split into various pairings. Bones struggles along with a pretty badly hurt Spork after patching him up the best he can. Uhura and Zulu are the two that find themselves in Krall's concentration camp. Captain Kirk and Chekov survive some double-crossing. The light moments come from Scotty's encounter with Jaylah who initially addresses him with a formal "Montgomery Scott". "Scotty" he suggests, in response to which she calls him "Montgomery Scotty". Meeting Captain Kirk later, she calls him "Jamesty". Eventually everybody get back together for the grand finale, expected.

Some critics criticize (surprise!) this movie for not giving the characters enough depth. I am not sure how high is depth of characters in the priority list of a general Star Trek fan. I would suggest that "Star Trek Beyond" delivers. This is what a Star Trek fan would like to see in future instalments of the Star Trek legacy, now rebooted, with an excellent cast/crew comprising Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin who, sadly, died last month from accidental cause. This movie was initially dedicated to the memory of Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock, shown in the closing credit. To that is now added "for Anton". If Star Trek Beyond existed outside the arena of reboots and sequels that mandated its existence, the movie’s casual air might be downright radical for such an extensive production. Instead, it’s just a sturdy riff on the same old routine. Source. In story terms, it seems most likely that Carol Marcus has left the Enterprise for unknown reasons prior to the events of Beyond. The adversary Krall is ultimately identifieda deformed Balthazer M. Edison, captain of the U.S.S. Franklin, a ship that, according to Scotty, disappeared without a trace in 2164, shortly after the foundation of the Federation of Planets. Krall/Edison is also identifieda former M.A.C.O. (Starfleet Marines), and mentions fighting during the Xindi War (2153-2154)wellthe Romulan-Earth Wars (2156-2160). Especially the mentioning of the Xindi War is interesting, because this places him directly on board the Enterprise NX-01, during the events of the third season of Enterprise (2001). He later states that he became disillusioned when the Federation was founded, and there was no apparent need for soldiers anymore. He received command of the U.S.S. Franklin in recognition of his services for Starfleet, and later disappeared. Some viewers have noted that this does not seem to fit in the official Star Trek timeline. If Edison received command of a ship after the Romulan Wars, how could it be a warp 4 ship? By the time the wars had ended, the Enterprise NX-01 and the Columbia NX-02 had already been flying with warp 5 engines for many years. So this is a potential error on the part of the writers of Star Trek Beyond.

However, there is a fitting explanation for this. According to the Star Trek timeline, warp 2.5 was achieved in 2142, and warp 3 in 2145. Since we know that the Enterprise NX-01 launched with an experimental warp 5 engine in 2151, the prototype warp-4 vessel U.S.S. Franklin must have been built somewhere in the late 2140s. This is sustained by several other observations: the ship is very close in design and size to the Enterprise NX-02 (relatively flat with the nacelles almost directly attached to the saucer section), it has transporters that were only used for cargo (Enterprise NX-01 was the first with a transporter that could also transport humans), and it still has conventional torpedoes for weapons (Enterprise NX-01 started out with these, but soon switched to photon torpedoes). So the U.S.S. Franklin must have been useda cargo ship long before Edison received command of it. By that time, it must have been at least 11 years old, capable of only warp 4 and without transporters for personal transfer. Since Edison was already upset about losing his joba MACO, being offered an obsolete ship may have added to his frustration.
